Biographical Note

Marie Anton Thurman was born to Dr. Thomas J. and Elena Kepas Anton in 1927 in Denver, Colorado. After moving to Salt Lake City, she attended East High School and the University of Utah, and she graduated from Utah State University in 1952 with a BA. She was married to Richard Young Thurman on March 2, 1947, with whom she had two children, Alexandra and Thomas. She was a pianist and a poet throughout her life. Marie passed away on August 29, 2007.

Content Description

This collection contains a book of Marie's poetry, entitled Forty-Three Poems of Marie Anton , as well as a folder of various documents, including photos, a memorial invitation, emails and letters, her obituary, and the eulogy which her husband, Richard, wrote. Florence Griffin Butler was the recipient of this correspondence and also wrote a tribute which is included in this collection. Marie's poetry focuses on her Greek heritage, her personal relationships and hardships, and her Utah environment. The other materials address her accomplishments as a poet and her life in twentieth-century Utah.
