Historical NoteReturn to Top
In 1890, George Warren Weatherly began making ice cream in a candy shop. His business interests grew, and, by 1907, the Weatherly Creamery Company was a dealer in dairy machinery and supplies, as well as a manufacturer of cheese and butter, on the east side of Portland. The Crystal Ice & Storage Company, also owned by George Weatherly, appears to have been connected to the creamery, but the exact relationship is unclear. At one time, Weatherly Ice Cream was reputed to have been producing the majority of Oregon's ice cream. By the 1920s, Western Dairy Products Company was also connected to the creamery, and to Weatherly himself. The creamery was first located at 360 E. Morrison, but most of its years in business were spent at 432 E. Salmon.
Weatherly's numerous business enterprises included the building of the first skyscraper on the east side of Portland, in 1928. Called the Weatherly Building, it was located at the southeast corner of East Grand and Morrison streets.
