Historical NoteReturn to Top
Edward "Ed" Offley was an historian and journalist who focused primarily on the military. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1969, soon after joining the Navy and serving aboard the USS Midway and was deployed to Vietnam. Offley began his career as a reporter in 1981 working for publications like the The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Stripes.com, and DefenseWatch. He has published five books on the topic of naval history including “The Burning Shore: How Hitler’s U-boats Brought World War II to America,” “Turning the Tide: How a Small Band of Allied Sailors defeated the U-boats and Won the Battle of the Atlantic,” and “Scorpion Down: Sunk by the Soviets.”
