Detailed Description of the Collection
-
Accession No. 0557-001: Gerard Tonning papers, circa 1900-1940
3.63 cubic feet (5 boxes)Arrangement: This inventory represents only preliminary arrangement of the papers, especially the music manuscripts. Boxes 1 and 2 contain all papers other than music and all music small enough to stand in file folders. Cartons 3-5 contain scores (almost all manuscripts) which are larger and are packed flat.
All operas and orchestral music which could be identified have been listed. Songs, choral music, piano and chamber music were individually listed for larger pieces. In these categories, however, more than half of the total volume is listed as unsorted scores. Some of the miscellaneous scores are unidentified, fragments, or parts which may belong with larger works.
Scope and Content: Music manuscripts, writings, correspondence, photographs, programs, clippings ephemera.
Much of the music is fragile and crumbling. Some of the scores are in negative format (white on black and reversed) or blueprint. Very few published versions of the music were among the papers. All published sheet music is listed.
