Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Born in Matanzas, Teresita Pérez grew up amidst one of the richest folkloric communities in Cuba. In recognition of her talent and dedication to her art she was asked to join the world-renowned Grupo Afrocuba de Matanzas in 1982 at the age of 17. Since then, she has performed and toured with Afrocuba in capacities ranging from ensemble member to principal dancer and educator and has earned awards and commendations for her work both in Cuba and abroad. Her other accomplishments include participating in the Festival de Caribe in Santiago de Cuba, the Fiesta de Rumba y Tambor, and the Havana Jazz Festival. In 1986 she traveled to Angola, West Africa with Afrocuba and was invited to participate in the Banff Centre for the Arts Afrocubanismo Festival in Banff, Canada. Teresita is dedicated to preserving the integrity of these artistic forms as well as presenting a contemporary perspective. She brings to her work an infectious spirit and a high degree of energy.
