Historical Note

Kenneth Lorimer Cook (1915-1996) received his B.S. in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1939 and his Ph.D. in geology, physics, and paleontology with highest honors at the University of Chicago in 1943. From 1946 through 1953 he worked for the Geophysics Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey investigating mining districts of the West. From 1952 through 1982 he was a Professor of Geophysics at the University of Utah. Through his career at the University of Utah he was head of the Department of Geophysics (1952-1963) and director of the University Seismograph Stations (1952-1976). His research of earth crust, upper mantle, seismology, and cartography have been a major contribution to the geological community. Materials involved with the Interpretation of Resistivity Data are located within the Collection. The correspondence included is generally of a professional nature between Cook, his colleagues, and other scientists.
