Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1944, Henry K. Benson, Head of the UW Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Departments, established the Pulp Mills Research Project under the direction of Chemical Engineering Professor Joseph L. McCarthy. Financial support came from about 20 of the region's pulp and paper mills. Pollution entering the rivers from these mills was severe and they were facing the possibility of being shut down. The new research project was intended to find solutions to the pollution problem. Results of the studies were published in over 100 scientific papers and presentations.
