Historical NoteReturn to Top
A gendèr, commonly used in Balinese and Javanese gamelan music, is a type of metallophone consisting of 12-14 metal bars suspended over a tuned resonator. In Javanese music, a mallet made of a padded wooden disk is used to strike the resonator and create sound. Each bar represents a different note, and a single instrument is often used to cover about two octaves. A gendèr should not be confused with a Balinese gangsa or a Javanese slenthem. Although they appear similar, each produces its own distinct sounds.
