Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Kenneth Hargreaves (1914-2003) was born in Winnipeg, Canada. He attended school in Vancouver, British Columbia. He subsequently moved to the United States, arriving in Seattle in 1929. He became a naturalized citizen in 1936, after attending Roosevelt High School and while enrolled at the University of Washington. In 1938 he became the first UW student to graduate in Industrial Design. A member of the Theta Chi fraternity during his time at the Univeristy of Washington, he remained active in this organization for many years as both a member of its Board of Trustees and an officer of its alumni group.

Hargreaves worked in Seattle as a designer and architect for 40 years. He began his career in 1941 as a draftsman for C.C. Belknap Glass Co. before being hired by Boeing in 1942, as a preliminary design engineer. In 1951, he became a resident architect for the Metropolitan Building Corp. From 1954 to 1960 he was a design partner in the firm Turner & Hargreaves, Architects, A.I.A., along with fellow design partner Edwin Thurlow Turner. In 1956, Turner & Hargreaves served as supervising architects for the design and construction of University Village in Seattle. After leaving Turner & Hargreaves he worked as a contract architect for many firms, including Ronald R. Campbell, DeLaney and Associates, and Tracey Brunstrom Dudley and Associates. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, and was named member Emeritus in his later years.
