Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Ethel Chaiken was born July 27, 1914 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She moved with her family to Seattle one year later. She attended Seattle Public Schools and the University of Washington until 1936. Ethel was active in the Seattle chapter of Hadassah (president) and other communal endeavors. She married Benton M. Lippman, also a University of Washington graduate, in 1937 and raised 3 children: Lev, Susan, and Frank. Ethel was the Director of Public Relations for the King County Library System from 1957-1962. In July of 1962 she moved to Israel and established residency there, where she became involved in social welfare, educational and medical services through women's volunteer organizations until 1977. Ethel married Fred Kaiser in Israel in 1966. The family surname was originally Chaikin but was changed to Chaiken.
