Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Steve Reich (1936-), from New York City, is a composer, author, and pianist. In 1957, he graduated from Cornell University with a BA in philosophy and a minor in music. He then went on to study at Juliard and received an MA from Mills College (Oakland, CA) in composition. He promoted minimalism in music in the 1960s along with several other prominent composers--including La Monte Young, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass. He is known for using tape loops to create phasing patterns and incorporating repetition into his compositions. He has composed music for orchestras, ensembles, and small groups and has authored multiple books on the subject of music.
