Historical NoteReturn to Top

KUOW is a public news radio station in Seattle covering the Puget Sound region. One of the founding National Public Radio (NPR) member stations, it has been continually broadcasting since 1952.

After getting it's start in a temporary building on the University of Washington campus, the station moved to new facilities in the communications building. KUOW's initial role was to give student and amateur broadcasters hands-on expierience and had a range of programming to meet this goal. In the 1960s the station expanded from broadcasting five days to six when they added programming on Saturdays. In the 1970s KUOW began broadcasting national news programs through the newly created National Public Radio service. The station also began the shift to professional broadcasters at this time, as well as receiving financial support independent from the University.
