Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Department of English was established at the University of Montana in 1895, with President Oscar J. Craig as its first faculty member. The department, founded to teach composition and English literature, was also the original home of the university’s ancient language education. Later additions to the department’s curriculum included creative writing, dramatics, public speaking and debate, American literature, and regional literatures.

The collection consists of office files from the Department of English. Particularly extensive are materials relating to the Montana Writer’s Conference in 1951 and the Regional Arts Roundup in 1950 to 1952. There are questions from senior exams and some files relating to the Creative Writing program. There are also materials related to W. P. Clark’s classical languages course, including student papers. Additional materials about the department may be found in the files of the Office of the President.
