Historical Background
Brothers Julius (1873-1951) and Isadore “Izzie” (1874-1952) Shafer were born in Russia, the children of Abraham Schofowitch (shortened to Shafer) and Sarah Jacobs. Julius and Izzie Shafer immigrated to the United States in the 1880s. Together they owned and operated the Shafer Brothers, a retail clothing and men’s furnishing company, as well as working as auctioneers and pawnbrokers. Together they also partnered as property owners, with a real estate portfolio that included the Arcade Building (built in 1906), Columbia Theatre and Mutual Life Building. In 1923, the Shafer Brothers developed the Shafer Building at Sixth Avenue and Pine Street in Downtown Seattle, which is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The former Shafer family home at 907 14th Avenue East is currently a bed and breakfast known as the Shafer Baillie Mansion.
