Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Roland Carey began work as a high school teacher on the Makah Indian reservation in Sept. 1947. He was aware that James G. Swan, the first teacher on the reservation beginning in 1862, had kept a diary of his experiences. Carey decided to do the same with the hope of comparing the two experiences. In 1991, Carey made a trip back to the reservation to see how things had changed. He wrote this manuscript comparing Swans's efforts to teach the Native Americans with his own, using his own diary and the Swan diaries, and noted further changes between 1947 and 1991.
