In 2001, the College of Law at the University of Utah was renamed the S.J. Quinney College of Law by a unanimous vote of the University's Board of Trustees in recognition of a $26 million gift bequeathed to the college by the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney Foundation. During the period covered by the bulk of this collection, the College of Law embarked on efforts of outreach to the wider community. Primary among these efforts were programs to recruit and promote women and minority students into the law profession. Other efforts included the Elderlaw Project, the Family Law Clinic, the Homeless Law Project, and the Utah Criminal Justice Center. The College of Law also became involved in legal issues surrounding natural resources and the environment with the creation of the Energy Law Center in 1973 which was later renamed the Wallace Stegner Center for Land, Resources, and the Environment in 1995.

The bulk of this collection contains records from the administrations of Deans Samuel D. Thurman (1962-1975), Walter E. Oberer (1975-1983), Edward D. Spurgeon (1983-1990), Lee E. Teitelbaum (1990-1998), and Scott M. Matheson, Jr. (1998-2006). The majority of the records consists of correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, and reports documenting the administration of the College of Law. This collection also contains materials pertaining to courses offered by the college. Also covered are college of law institutes and programs such as the Elderlaw Project, the Family Law Clinic, Homeless Law Project, and the Wallace Stegner Center. Most of the material predating 1965 consists of membership records from the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.
