Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Tape-recorded interview conducted by Adina Russak, 6/27/89.
Irene talks of her youth in the beginning of Hitler's reign and of her fright until they escaped to the United States in 1937. The family lived in New York for a year, but followed an uncle to Seattle and started a beauty supply business. Irene went to the University of Washington when the first Zionist activities were being organized. She talkes about her membership and work with a number of Jewish organizations. Talks, at length, of Russian Resettlement and fund raising in general in the Federation. Speaks about Directors Murray Schiff and Irv Goldberg. Also mentions reasons for moving to Israel.
The last part of the third tape is a recording of Irene Steinberg's husband, Sheldon Steinberg, briefly discussing his own activities in Jewish Federation, Israel Bonds, Bikur Cholim Congregation, and Jewish Day School.
