Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Jalil Shahnaz (1921-2013) was a classical musician from Isfahan, Persia (modern day Iran). During his youth, he studied music under his brother and was friends with the ney player Hassan Kassai. He performed as a soloist in the 1950s and in the 1980s joined the Perisan Music Maestros Ensemble. Shahnaz has composed pieces for tar (an iranian long-necked stringed instrument) and performed his music around the world.

Nour Ali Boroumand (1905-1977) was a multi-instrumentalist and music teacher from Tehran, Persia (modern day Iran). At age 13 he studied under Darvish Khan and Habib Samai. He later moved to Germany where he studied Western musical traditions before returning to Tehran. He performed music on the tet, setar, santure, violin, kamanche, and tombak. Some of his pupils included Mohammad Reza Lotfi, Hossein Alizadeh, and Darioush Tala'i.
