Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Milo Pitney Atkins was born in Shannon, Carroll, Illinois on February 21, 1895 to John Pitney Atkins (1860-1959) and Luella Gemmill Atkins (1866-1929). He had an older sister, Edna M. Atkins Wilkes (1892-1958). He studied at the University of Illinois in Urbana in 1917, and was drafted for WWI, living in Freeport, Illinois. He is listed in the 1930 census as an architect living in a Clinton, Iowa boarding house. He worked for George Waale who was an architect where Milo was an associate designer for William P. Merry Co., Realtors. An article in the July 26, 1931 Oregonian announces the Merry firm hiring Milo Atkins, "recently active as an architect in Chicago and the mid-west and who is well acquainted with Portland through former residence here." During WWII, Atkins worked in Seattle at the U.S. Engineers Office, living at 602 Boylston Ave. S. He died on September 15, 1986 in Portland, Oregon with no immediate surviving family members.
