Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Addis or Addison Ludden was a Tacoma photographer born in Southampton, Massachusetts on February 9, 1851. He was married to Luti "Lula" Davison in 1888. They had one son, Louis Addison, born in 1891 who died two years later on November 30, 1893. Ludden operated a photo studio in Tacoma but eventually gave up the practice to live in the mountains, returning to town in top hat and tailcoat to sell Addis Ludden Herbs. He died in 1927.

Custodial History

A note accompanying the collection says the collection is "from the Gates Papers." The Charles Gates papers were donated over time between 1963 and 1967. These photographs do not directly relate to the contents of the Gates collection so they may have been separated out from the Gates collection at that time. The modern prints accompanying the negatives were most likely made much later, possibly during the 1980s or 1990s.

Acquisition Information

Donor: probably Mildred Gates between 1963 and 1967.

Processing Note

Processed by Heather Robbins; processing completed in 2012.

One original stereocard (not from the Gates donation) transferred from PH Coll 31 Northwest Photographers Stereocard Collection, 2012.
