Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Cyrus Rubin (1921-2011) earned his B.A. from Brooklyn College in 1943 and then went to Harvard to receive his M.D. in 1945. In Massachusetts, Rubin completed his residency in medicine at a Veterans Affairs hospital and his residency in radiology at Beth Israel in Boston. From Boston, Rubin moved to the University of Chicago where he finished fellowships in Gastroenterology.
Rubin joined the faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1954 where he was one of two gastrointestinal professionals. Due to a lack of infrastructure at UW, Rubin taught at Harborview hospital and the Veteran’s Affairs hospital. Professor Rubin is a well accomplished gastroenterologist. He published multiple scholarly articles on celiac disease which formed criteria for how to diagnose the disease. He also engineered new techniques in studying gastric and intestinal biopsies. For his work he was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award and the Friedenwald Medal from the American Gastroenterology Association, and the Rudolph Schindler Award from the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. The National Institutes of Health also awarded Dr. Rubin the Lifetime Career Research Award after its creation in 1986. The Cyrus E. Rubin Endowed Chair in Medicine for gastroenterology was created in 1986 to honor the memory of Cyrus Rubin at UW.
