Historical NoteReturn to Top

Frank Lee Cory was born on December 4, 1911, in Miles City, Montana. He was enlisted at Fort Missoula, Montana in 1933. He served in Unit C Company, First Battalion, 4th Infantry, and was discharged in 1937. In 1938, Cory went to work at a ranch fifty miles from Miles City. He worked there for three years, and married in 1941. That fall, he went to work at the Milwaukee Railroad in Miles City. In 1942, Cory was called back into service with the Army Air Corps, and sent overseas to England, where he worked in the motor pool repairing jeeps and trucks. After the war, he was sent back to the U.S. and was discharged in 1946 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad until 1958. He worked as a farm hand at Fort Keogh, Montana in 1959, and that fall began to work for the Miles City post office. He worked there for seventeen years, and retired at the age of sixty-four.

This collection includes four letters between Frank Cory and Wallace J. Long, dated 1983 and 1984, regarding the history of Fort Missoula in Missoula, Montana. As a volunteer researcher at the Historical Museum of Fort Missoula, Wallace Long wrote to Frank Cory requesting background information about Cory and his service experience at the fort in the 1930s and Cory responded. Cory also included a hand-drawn map of the fort and its buildings.
