Henry Lavender Adolfus Culmer was born in Davington, Kent, England, on 25 March 1854 to Frederick and Mary Kennett Culmer. His family joined the LDS Church and moved to America in 1867. They settled in Utah where H. L. A. Culmer began employment in the printing and book binding business. He married Susan Annette Wells in 1878 and began his painting career in the 1880s due to his association with George Ottinger and Alfred Lambourne. Culmer became famous for his scenic paintings of Utah and the intermountain states. He died in 1914.
