Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Mormon Tribune was founded in 1870 by a group of businessmen led by former LDS Church members William Godbe, Elias L.T. Harrison and John Tullidge. After a year its name was changed to the Salt Lake Daily Tribune and Utah Mining Gazette, and was shortly thereafter shortened to The Salt Lake Tribune. The Tribune became known as an anti-Mormon paper that was highly critical of President Brigham Young.

In 1901 U.S. Senator Thomas Kearns, along with his business partner David Keith bought the Tribune, and began eliminating the anti-Mormon overtones of the paper. Upon Keith's death in 1918 the Kearns family bought out his share of the Salt Lake Tribune Publishing Company.

John F. Fitzpatrick, became publisher in 1924. In 1952, the Tribune entered into a joint operating agreement with the Deseret News, Salt Lake's daily newspaper (which was owned by the LDS Church), creating the Newspaper Agency Corporation in 1960 Fitzpatrick died unexpectedly from a heart attack and an emergency session of the Kearns-Tribune Corp. board elected John W. Gallivan, publisher. He remained in that position until 1984 and chairman of the board until 1997.

The Kearns family owned a majority share of the newspaper until 1997 when they sold it to Tele-Communications Inc., a multimedia corporation, which was later acquired by AT&T. The Tribune was subsequently sold to Denver, Colorado-based MediaNews Group which is partially owned by publisher William Dean Singleton.

Detailed Description of the CollectionReturn to Top

1:  John W. Gallivan papersReturn to Top

Series 1, consisting of boxes 1 through 54 , contains the personal business files of John William "Jack" Gallivan. Gallivan became publisher emeritus of the Salt Lake Tribune in 1984. He started working with the Tribune in 1937, following his graduation from Notre Dame. While publisher, Gallivan was responsible for assisting in the creation of the Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) that governs the publication and relationship between both of Salt Lake's major newspapers, the Tribune and the Deseret News. During his 60-year career in the newspaper business, he helped to promote the development and renovation of the Salt Palace, Abravanel Hall, Capitol Theatre, the Bicentennial Arts Center and the city park that bears his name. He also figured prominently in Salt Lake City's bid for the 1972 Winter Olympics, initiating a process that ultimately resulted in the city's selection to play host to the highly successful 2002 Winter Games. Gallivan also was a co-founder of the cable television company Tele-Communications Inc.

The original filing organization and titles, from the donor, were maintained in this series.

4:  Newspaper Agency CorporationReturn to Top

Series 4, consisting of boxes 106-120, contain the records of the Newspaper Agency Corporation. NAC was founded in 1952 in response to the financial troubles experienced by both the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News. NAC began providing circulation, advertising and production services to both papers. In the 1960s NAC was subject to an anti-trust investigation, but in 1970 President Richard Nixon signed the Newspaper Preservation Act, thus protecting NAC. Where possible, original folder titles were maintained.
