These are the papers of the Luther Weedin family. Weedin was the sheriff of Island County, Washington, 1897-1901 and U.S. Immigration Commissioner in Seattle, 1922-1933. Subsequently he ran a title insurance business in Coupeville on Whidbey Island and also attempted a dairy business. His niece, Inger Mathews, also donated papers related to Coupeville to the Island County Historical Society.

Accession No. 3158-001: Weedin family papers, circa 1915-1935Return to Top
Scope and Content: Correspondence, diaries, clippings, legal documents.
Includes letters from Senators Jones and Poindexter (approx. 300 items) endorsing his appointment as Immigration Commissioner. Copies of the letters and Weedin's thank-you letters are included here. A census of Chinese laborers, 1905, was found among the Immigration Dept. papers. Athaleen Harrington Weedin's diaries (Mrs. Luther Weedin) for ca. 1919-1930 are included. The diaries include very sketchy details about her activities and weather records only; entries are usually less than one sentence.

Restrictions on Use: Creator's literary rights transferred to the University of Washington Libraries.
