Historical NoteReturn to Top

Patricia Robins Flint was born in Long Island, New York, in 1946. She later married John Flint and settled in Flint Creek Valley, Montana. She completed her undergraduate studies at Western College in 1968. In 1977, she received her M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Montana. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in 1982.

George Maurice Weaver, a Philipsburg, Montana, rancher, was born on August 9, 1893 in Granite County, Montana. His father was a sheep rancher and mine foreman. He attended grade school in Bearmouth, Montana. He dropped out of business school in 1908 to work for the railroad. Weaver served in World War I as a horseshoer and was later in charge of an outfit of African American soldiers. Between 1921 and 1926, he ran the Philipsburg Bank company ranch. Weaver was also involved in buying and selling horses out of Philipsburg. He took over the Weaver Ranch near Bearmouth upon the death of his father in 1928. He ran the ranch until his death in May 1979. In 1923, he married Rose Edgar. The couple had eight children: Elizabeth, Maurice, George, John, Emmett, Lyle, Robert, and Leland.

Patricial Robins Flint's manuscript, “The Life History of George Maurice Weaver,” is a paper that she presented to the University of Montana Department of Anthropology in 1975. The study includes an oral history transcript, as well as anthropological commentary by Flint.
