Biographical Note

John Goodlad was Professor of Education at the University of Washington. He was born in Vancouver, Canada in 1920 and later received his B.A. and M.A. at the University of British Columbia in 1945 and 1946 respectively. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1949. He began his career as a teacher in the Surrey schools in British Columbia. In 1947 he worked as a consultant for the Atlanta Area Teacher Education Service. From 1949 to 1956 he was a Professor at Emory University (becoming Director of the Division of Teacher Education in 1950). From 1956 to 1960 he was director of the Center for Teacher Education at the University of Chicago. Between 1960 and 1984 he held several positions while at the University of California at Los Angeles including Director of the University Elementary School (1960-1984), Dean of the Graduate School of Education (1967-1983), Director of the Laboratory in School and Community Education in the Graduate School of Education (1981-1984), and Director of Research for the Institute for Development of Educational Activities, Inc. (1966-1982). He was a visiting Professor at the University of Washington and Brigham Young University 1983-1985 and was appointed a Professor at the University of Washington College of Education in 1985. In 1986 he founded the Center for Educational Renewal at the University of Washington, serving as its director until his retirement in 1991. He founded the nonprofit Institute for Educational Inquiry in 1992, serving as its director until his death in 2014.
