Don Maguire was born in Vermont and moved to Utah in the 1870s. He was a graduate of a Franciscan college where he studied mathematics, engineering, French, Spanish, and Arabic. He was a miner, surveyor, explorer, trader, and writer.

The Don Maguire papers (1899) consist of a speech given by Maguire, entitled "The Antiquities of the Southwest," given before the Utah State Historical Society, and color copies of a letter written by Maguire to Professor L. S. Ropes concerning various geological aspects of Utah. The speech discusses the Native American tribes in the Southwest, specifically discussing those tribes that once existed but are now extinct. Maguire explains their culture, living conditions, and how they mummified their dead. He also briefly describes their appearance.
