Dorothy Conway had degrees in drama and in home economics and dress design from the University of Washington. She taught dress design at the University of Washington, San Jose State College, and Kanses State College. She worked as a professional designer and later became a photographer. She was the wife of John Ashby Conway who was a drama professor at University of Washington and she documented many of the theater productions at the University. She was mainly a portrait photographer and photographed many people in the arts and music. In 1956, she had the first one-person show of portrait photography ever held at the Seattle Art Museum. The Conways later opened The Farmhouse, a restaurant in Port Townsend.
