Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Voe Lucas was the widow of Ralph Lucas, who along with his brother Omer "Red" Lucas, were known as the Lucas Brothers. From 1933-36, they contracted with the Potlatch Forest Company to operate a "gypo" scale for weighing logs near Bovill, Idaho. Voe was the company cook and bookkeeper. Prior to 1933, the brothers farmed in the Palouse region, and both were also former Potlatch employees.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection contains an oral interview with Voe Lucas, which was conducted in May 1980 by her grandson Doug Bonstrom. The interview was conducted for an EWU Pacific Northwest History class taught by Dr. Michael Green. Side one of the tape consists of Lucas describing the "gypo" operation; the other side contains five stories of her personal experiences. Accompanying the interview is an introduction by Bonstrom and various records connected with the Lucas Brothers "gypo" business, including correspondence, ledgers, and invoices.
