Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies organizes and supports interdisciplinary teaching and research in international affairs. It offers language and other area study programs on major world regions, as well as topical and comparative courses of study that transcend national and regional boundaries. The Jackson School was first established in 1909 as the Department of Oriental Subjects. The name was changed to the Far Eastern and Russian Institute after World War II and to the School of International Studies in 1978 to reflect the comprehensive range of world studies that were then offered. The current name was first used in 1983 to recognize the recently deceased Senator Henry M. Jackson's interest in international affairs and support for the School. Unlike many other schools of its kind, the Jackson school supports its own core faculty, some of whom have joint appointments in other parts of the University.

Biographical/Historical Note: The International Studies Center is based in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and focuses on the examination of how various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences can draw upon area studies knowledge to make more comparative and general statements about world culture, economics, and politics. The Center's programs of research, outreach, and teaching seek to enhance the understanding of those circumstances whereby changes occur in international institutions and behavior. The Center has directed much of its outreach towards teachers of international studies at two-year and four-year colleges in the region through colloquia in International Political Economy, State-Society Relations, and International Security. The Center also works closely with the seven other National Resource Centers at the Jackson School in sponsoring campus lectures and the Colloquium on Ethnicity and Nationalism. Through the affiliated academic program, the International Studies Program, the Center offers an undergraduate major, undergraduate minor, and a master’s degree offered jointly with six professional schools at the University of Washington.
