Historical NoteReturn to Top
Fanny Heaslip Lea (1883-1955) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She graduated from Sophie Newcomb College, New Orleans in 1904 and then did two years of post-graduate work at Tulane. Lea married Hamilton Pope Agee in 1911 and they had one daughter, Anne Worthen.
Between 1906-1911, Lea worked as a journalist for New Orleans newspapers and also began to sell short stories during this period. She eventually gave up newspaper work and made writing her full-time profession. Her short stories appeared in Harper's and Collier's magazines and her romances were serialized in magazines, newspapers, and serials such as The Saturday Evening Post.
She also wrote essays, novels, plays, and poetry. At least three of her novels have been made into films.
