Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Susan Sunada was born in Utah, the daughter of Japanese-American pioneers. A graduate of Los Angeles City College, Susan worked as a photojournalist for the Deseret News in the 1960s and 1970s and was presented with an "Outstanding Correspondent" award. She was the writer, producer, and directer for Logan's Bicentennial Celebration ice show and has represented Japanese and Chinese pioneers in the Cache Valley's "Festival of the American West" for numerous years. In 2002, Susan was awarded the National Association for Asian American Studies Lifetime Achievement award. She continues to offer a wealth of information from her significant research on Japanese pioneers. She is the author of Tiny Treasures (1970), Wedding Treasures (1974), and Japanese Pioneers in the Intermountain Area (1991).

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection contains the professional papers of Susan Sunada spanning the period of 1960 to 2003. This collection consists of Sunada's research papers during her employment period with the Deseret News, political papers from her employment with Cache County, research papers on the Topaz detainment camp for Japanese-Americans who where held in Utah during the World War II period, and research papers on Japanese-Americans in Utah and the West. These papers include biographical information on thousands of Japanese-Americans who have lived in Utah, photographs and research on Japanese-American cemetery headstones, a complied collection from the English section of Utah Japanese-American newspaper The Utah Nippo (1941-1946), and a compiled collection of photocopied newspaper clippings on Japanese-Americans from newspapers throughout Utah and from southern Idaho that spans a one-hundred year period.

Note: Some materials from this collection have been removed and were catalogued separately, including two issues of The Utah Nippo: Japanese-American Address & Telephone Directory (1963 and 1976) and Sunada's photographs, which were transferred to Special Collections' photograph curator.
