Historical NoteReturn to Top
Alfred Kessler was born in 1912 in New York City, where he was raised and attended school. He was a student at Trinity School and later Brown University and the Columbia School of Public Health. He met his wife Frances Colwell Hazard in New York. Frances attended Pembrooke/Brown University and Columbia School of Law. They married in 1941. Kessler's career emphasized the public health fight against tuberculosis. He worked in public health in a few states, including Indiana and Mississippi. Additionally, Dr. Kessler served as president of the United Nations Association of Utah, serving both the local and international community through advocacy and outreach. Kessler traveled widely, including many visits to his extended family in Germany. Included in the Multimedia section of this collection are myriad photographs from his trips abroad, including photos from Germany in the 1930s, which feature a National Socialist (Nazi) march, and propaganda postcards. Kessler lived to age 102 and enjoyed an active life, even skiing at Alta Ski Resort well into his 90s. Kessler passed away in 2015.

The collection contains materials from a variety of aspects of Kessler's life including but not limited to family, school, and medical records, travel papers and memorabilia, an extensive photograph collection, public health materials, newspaper clippings, and decades worth of journals.
