Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Frank Furniss Warren, son of Robert Hopkins and Alice May (Furniss) Warren, was born November 23, 1899 at Gilead, Michigan. His father was a clergyman of the Free Methodist Church. He received a B.A. from Seattle Pacific College in 1922, pursued religious training at the New York Biblical Seminary in 1922-23, and received an M. A. degree from Drew University in 1929. He was ordained to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church in 1940. Warren was married in Seattle, Washington, June 28, 1922, to Lucile, daughter of James Monroe Secord of Nash, Oklahoma. The couple had three children: Miriam Joyce, Virginia Lucile and Kenneth Rees. Following experiences as a pastor in Seattle and as a missionary and teacher in Japan he became the dean of the department of religion at Seattle Pacific College in 1933. In 1940 he became the president of Whitworth College, Spokane, Washington, a position he held until his death on December 10, 1963. He was known for his dedication to the building of Whitworth College into a sound and thriving institution, getting it recognized nationally as a major denominational institution of higher learning. Warren was a master crafter of religious addresses and sermons as the folios which follow will show. He was dedicated both to the enlargement of the physical plant of the college and to the strengthening of its liberal arts curriculum and faculty. Warren’s personal life while president of Whitworth College was almost completely devoted to the affairs of the college. Therefore, folders dealing with the president’s office will be found scattered throughout the collection.
