- This collection consists of biographical materials, correspondence, financial records, legal documents, and miscellany of the Warren family. Included are papers of Charles S. and Mittie Warren, Mary W. and John M. Murphey (the Warren's daughter and her husband), Katherine and Dudley Brown (the Murphey's daughter and her husband), James and Anna Brown (Dudley's parents), and James McCartin (Anna Brown's second husband). Also included in the collection is a guest register (1890-1936) of visitors to the Cedar Cottage in Hope, Idaho; and subject files of general correspondence, and financial and legal records, concerning various mining companies.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Charles S. Warren was born in Illinois in 1846, served in the Union Army in the Civil War, and in 1866 drove a bull train to Virginia City, Montana Territory. He taught school in the Deer Lodge valley while placer mining during the summers. From 1869 to 1875 he served as deputy sheriff and sheriff, of Deer Lodge. He later moved to Butte where he continued his activities in mining and also became the first police magistrate. Later he was elected clerk of U.S. District Court, and was a member of the state Constitutional Convention in 1889. He established the Comanche Mining Company, the Charles S. Warren Realty and Mining Company, and in association with Lee Mantle, the Intermountain Publishing Company. Charles married Mittie Avery of Maine, in 1871. Their daughter, Mary, married John Murphey of Butte.

This collection consists of biographical materials, correspondence, financial records, legal documents, and miscellany of the Warren family. Included are subgroups for Charles S. and Mittie Warren, including a guest register (1890-1936) to the Cedar Cottage in Hope, Idaho; Mary W. and John M. Murphey (the Warren's daughter and her husband); Katherine and Dudley Brown (the Murphey's daughter and her husband); James and Anna Brown (Dudley's parents); James McCartin (Anna Brown's second husband); and a Mining subgroup of subject files of general correspondence, and financial and legal records, concerning mining companies in which members of the Warren family had invested.
