The firm was founded in 1919 in Seattle by William Mallis. Mallis had several different partners in the next decades. In 1983 long-term employee Matthew J. Gregory became a minority partner and an equal partner in 1988, when Thomas E. Chapel was hired. In 1990 the firm became Gregory & Chapel Architects. It disbanded in 1996.
