Historical NoteReturn to Top

Frank Cyrus Carman (1909-1989), an electrical engineer and early commercial broadcasting entrepreneur in Utah, was instrumental in the establishment of several Utah radio and television stations. After receiving a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Utah, Carman founded KEUB (later KOAL) in Price, Utah, in 1937, and KUTA (later KLUB) in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1938. Carman also founded KUTV, an ABC television affiliate, in 1954, as well as other radio and television stations in the intermountain west. KLUB included both AM and FM stations, the latter of which was known as KLUB-FM and, later, KISN. From the mid-1960s onward, KLUB broadcast a “beautiful music” format, although this was changed to adult contemporary in the early 1980s. KLUB also operated its own newsroom, covering state and local news, and broadcast various public affairs programming including editorials, syndicated commentary, and religious programs.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Frank Cyrus Carman papers (1924-1989) consist of documents relating primarily to the operations of KLUB and KLUB-FM / KISN during the 1970s and early 1980s. These materials include transcripts of advertisements and public affairs programming, public and general correspondence, financial records, broadcast license applications, news coverage, and publicity materials. Also included are Carman’s amateur radio QSL (transmission receipt acknowledgement) cards from the 1920s and early 1930s, as well as profiles of Carman from the Salt Lake Tribune.
