Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Whitman College Outdoor Program was founded circa 1969 by a group of students. It was originally called the Outing Club, and it was entirely run by student volunteers who led trips ranging from hiking, to camping to biking. Brien Sheedy was hired as the director of the Outdoor Program in 2001, and he formalized the program with an emphasis on safety. In addition to weekend trips, and wilderness and safety courses, the Outdoor Program is also in charge of Scrambles, which are trips for incoming first-year students.
