Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interview conducted by Meta Kaplan, covering 1890-1976, with transcript, Oct. 11, 1976.
Louis Schwartz's father, Maurice, came to Seattle from Hungary. He started the Alaska Junk Company in 1890 on Western Avenue. Schwartz describes the growth of the business, which he and his brother Harry entered in 1931-1932, especially during the boom years of World War I. He talks about the short-lived Peddlers Union, the decline of the scrap business and the beginnings of the family's real estate holdings. Finally, the current business of dismantling plants and Spokane scrap metal is covered. Schwartz speaks briefly about the family's shifting affiliations between Bikur Cholim and Herzl congregations and the influence of Rabbi Appel.
