The University of Montana Faculty Senate records, 1895-2002

This subseries contains drafts, revisions, and amendments to the Faculty Senate's Articles of Organization (also referred to as a Constitution) and bylaws. The earliest approved version of the Senate's Articles of Organization is from 1961. The earliest approved copy of the bylaws is from 1962.

This subseries contains minutes and agendas for the Faculty Senate. The minutes are arranged in chronological order at the beginning of the subseries. Minutes between 1969-1980 contain an alphabetic index attached to the front of each file of minutes for an academic year.

Some minutes contain student information protected by the Family Educational Rights and Protection Act (FERPA). This information was removed if it could be separated without losing other minutes or information. Where such removal was not possible, the minutes have been restricted.

This subseries contains subject files related to issues discussed by the Faculty Senate. The subject files largely consist of correspondence and reports, including reports from Faculty Senate committees. The correspondence and subject files are interfiled and arranged chronologically.

This subseries consists primarily of reports pertaining to budgets and salaries during the 1970s and 1980s, which were periods of financial stress for the University. This series also contains enrollment data from 1969-1979 compiled by the Academic Program Review Committee.

This subseries contains the accounts of past Faculty Senate chairmen who served from 1961-1982, as well as membership lists from 1962-1978.

This subseries contains materials related to the drafting and revision of policies for faculty advancement.

This subseries contains minutes, agendas, correspondence, and subject files for issues discussed by the Committee. This subseries is organized in chronological order.

This subseries contains correspondence, minutes, and annual budget requests.

The Elections Committee administered elections to the Faculty Senate. This subseries includes election results, correspondence, and documents outlining the responsibilities of the Committee.

As part of its planning process, the ECOS scheduled an annual retreat. Included in this subseries are agendas, minutes, and correspondence from the retreats. Documents distributed to retreat participants are also contained in this subseries.

The creation of this subseries arose as Lawrence Pettit began serving as Montana's first Commissioner of Higher Education. This subseries contains clippings, correspondence, reports, and minutes from the Board of Regents. The minutes were initially requested by Keith McDuffie in his capacity as Chairman of the Faculty Senate. The minutes were interfiled with correspondence from Pettit and the Board, as well as clippings about Pettit. While these materials are not a part of ECOS' ongoing functions and activities, the files are a part of the memory gathered by McDuffie and subsequent chairmen on an important period for The University of Montana and the Montana University System.

This subseries contains rosters and listings for faculty members sitting on University committees. Many of the lists break the committees down according to whom the committee reported.

The Academic Standards and Curriculum Review Committee (ASCRC) is responsible for evaluating curriculum and standards regarding admission, retention, and graduation. Prior to the the creation of ASCRC,, the Curriculum Committee and the Admissions, Graduation, and Academic Standards Committee (AGAS) performed the duties currently carried out by the ASCRC. Files produced by these predecessors are contained in this subseries. The Committee makes regular proposals and recommendations based on its ongoing evaluation. This subseries consists of correspondence, minutes, reports, and reviews of specific policies and programs. Beginning in fiscal year 1984, files of minutes, correspondence, and program reviews were retained. This subseries is arranged chronologically.
