Howard Duryee Wheeler (1880-1958) was born in Montclair, New Jersey, and educated at Columbia College and Stanford University. He became a newspaper and magazine editor and manager. He began his career as a reporter in Bakersfield and San Francisco, California. He was the editor of the San Francisco Daily News from 1906 to 1908, and then worked as editor and Pacific Coast manager of Newspaper Enterprise Association, 1908-1914.

He was then managing editor of Harper's Weekly from 1914 to 1915, and from 1915-1919 was editor of Everybody's Magazine. Next, he was employed as general manager of McClure Newspaper Syndicate from 1922 to 1926, then he was editor of Conde Syndicate, 1928-1932, and chief editorial writer for the New York Daily Mirror from 1932 to 1936.

The collection (circa 1880-1958) consists of his autobiography, titled Harbor at Dawn.

The autobiography is bound, but unpublished, and it describes personal and family history, and also reporting jobs, interviews (including one with President Wilson), and journalism in general. It has five chapters, four of which correspond to age (12, 24, 36, and 48), and the last chapter is the same as the name of the book, "Harbor at Dawn."
