Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Harvey Whitefield Scott (1838-1910) was an 1863 graduate of Pacific University and best known as long-time editor, and eventually part-owner, of the Oregonian newspaper (Portland). Born in Illinois, he traveled to Oregon in 1852, served with the Washington Territory Volunteers during the Yakima War, and spent his early years in Oregon as a farmer. Following his graduation from Pacific, he worked as a librarian and studied the law. His newspaper career began in 1865 and continued until his death. He was a founding member of the Oregon Historical Society and served as its first president, served as president of the Lewis and Clark Exposition, and wrote on various local history topics.
