Historical NoteReturn to Top
KOAC-TV was established in 1957. It was administered by the Oregon State System of Higher Education's General Extension Division as part of the Department of Educational Media until the early 1980s when administration was transferred to what is now known as Oregon Public Broadcasting.
Beginning in 1957, KOAC-TV produced and broadcast several films for Great Decisions, a community program offered by the Extension Service and the Foreign Policy Association that was aimed at building informed public opinion on foreign policy.
Under contract with the Oregon Centennial Commission, KOAC produced a school series on Oregon history, "With Her Own Wings" in 1959 and distributed kinescope films of the series to Oregon schools through the Department of Visual Instruction.
The "In Our Care" series, sponsored by the Oregon State Board of Control and produced by KOAC in 1959-1960, documented Oregon's prisons, hospitals, and schools for the handicapped and delinquent. Photographer Bill Rush filmed and Bob Richter produced and directed the series.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Most of the films are from three television series: In Our Care, With Her Own Wings, and the Great Decisions Program. The group also includes films produced for the Colleges for Oregon's Future program, television broadcasts from the Oregon State Fair in Salem, and men's basketball games. Other notable films show the Klamath Falls and Warm Springs Indians; the dedication of Gill Coliseum; and the 1964 commencement ceremony.

Arrangement
Some of the films have been assigned individual numbers (P207:1-16). However, most of the films have been described as groups by the primary subject or the television series for which they were made; these groups are Men's Basketball; State Fair; Great Decisions Program; With Her Own Wings; and In Our Care. The films are 16 mm; both b/w and color. For some films, both a negative and print are included; but there are several negatives without accompanying prints. The groups also includes many kinescope films (motion picture films made from an image on a picture tube).
Custodial History
The films were transfered to the Archives in 1988 from the former KOAC-TV studios on the Oregon State University campus.
Related Materials
An audiotape that accompanies the "In Our Care" program series is a part of the KOAC Records (RG 15). The Archives holdings also include films of KOAC-TV classroom television broadcasts (P205 - Chemistry Department and P119 - Communication Media Center). Brochures listing programs broadcast by KOAC-TV are available in the Memorabilia Collection (MC-KOAC-TV Programs). Information about the Great Decisions program is a part of the Extension Service Records (RG 111).
