Historical Note

The Center for Multicultural Education is a research center in the University of Washington College of Education. It was founded in 1992 by Professor James A. Banks, who remained its director until 2018. In 2018 the name of the center was changed to the Banks Center for Educational Justice with Prof. Django Paris as its new director.

The Center for Multicultural Education focused on research projects and activities designed to improve practice related to equity issues, intergroup relations, and the achievement of all students. The Center provided a variety of services related to its mission, including: Research on race, ethnicity, class, and education; publications for educational practitioners as well as in-depth examinations of research and scholarship in the field; a symposium-lecture series which focuses attention on topics related to race, ethnicity, class, and education; international conferences; graduate study at the master's and doctoral degree levels; and courses in multicultural education which run throughout the regular academic year as well as short summer courses, institutes, and workshops.
