Biographical NoteReturn to Top
The painter, sculptor, and fountain maker George Tsutakawa was born in Seattle on February 22, 1910. Tsutakawa was a Seattle resident for most of his life except for a period as a child and teenager when he lived in Fukuyama, Japan with his maternal grandmother. Before becoming a well-respected artist locally and globally, Tsutakawa studied sculpture at the University of Washington. He would also teach there for 35 years. His work can be seen in cities around the world, but his first fountain was the one created for the Seattle Public Library, called Fountain of Wisdom, dedicated March 1, 1960. Some of his other works can also be found at the UW Tower at the University of Washington and on the corner of 6th Avenue and Seneca Street near the Freeway Park. On December 18, 1997 Tsutakawa passed away in his home in Seattle.
