Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Frank H. Jonas: was Professor of Political Science at the University of Utah. He received his B. S. and M. A. degrees from the University of Utah, and his Ph. D. from the University of Washington and holds certificates of achievement from the University of Berlin and the Hochschule fuer Politik in Germany (1931). After holding teaching and research fellowships at the University of Washington, he served subsequently on the staffs of the following universities: Idaho State, Southern California, New Mexico, Utah State, and in summer session, Illinois and Vanderbilt. He held the Chester W. Nimitz Chair of Social and Political Philosophy at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island (1960-1961). From 1943 to 1945 he served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps; he spent 1951-53 in Germany as a Press Scrutiny Officer, Cultural Exchange Officer and Information Specialist in HICOG, United States Department of State; and in 1958 he was a guest exchange professor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Professor Jonas was a member of Utah's first Legislative Council (1947-49); chairman of the Veterans' Council, Utah State Department of Veterans' Affairs (1948-51); and a consultant in personnel administration at Hill Air Force Base, USAF, Ogden, Utah (1951). He has served as president of the Western Political Science Association (1964-65) and of the University of Utah Education Association (1965-67). He has been a member of the UEA Political Action Committee (1964) and the Salt Lake County Planning Council (1963) and the Salt Lake County Welfare Board. Beginning his writings in local politics with "Utah: Sagebrush Democracy," in "Rocky Mountain Politics" (1940), he has produced over fifty articles on local and regional politics, has edited and contributed to "Western Politics" (1961) and "Politics in the American West" (1969), and has written the following monographs: "Western Politics and the 1956 Election," "Bibliography of Western Politics," "Western Politics and the 1958 Elections," and "Western Politics," and the "1962 Elections." His last recent monograph in "The Story of a Political Hoax."

The photographs in this collection were donated to the Library by Dr. Jonas in May of 1976, along with papers which can be found in the Manuscripts Division under Manuscript Register MS 641. Additional materials were donated by Mrs. Jonas in 1992. The majority of the collection consists of photographs of political subjects such as Utah and national political figures, the reconstruction of Germany after World War II, and the Nuremberg war crimes trials. The collection is unprocessed as of September 1996; see the Multimedia Archivist for access information.
