Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
Stereoscopic imaging is a technique that creates the illusion of depth using two 2-D images placed side by side; one in front of the left eye and one in front of the right eye of the viewer. Both offset 2-D images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of 3-D depth. Three strategies have been used to produce this effect: the viewer wears eyeglasses to combine separate images from two offset sources, the viewer wears eyeglasses to filter offset images from a single source separated to each eye, or the light source splits the images directionally into the viewer's eyes without glasses.

French Tissue StereocardsReturn to Top
French tissue stereocard techniques were developed by J.L. Tardieu in 1853. Tissue stereocards consist of a print on translucent paper mounted on a card cut to frame the print and often with a tissue added . The image could be tinted and the tint visible when lit from behind as a transparency. The tissue format of stereocards were available commercially by 1855. The largest amount of tissue stereocards were produced between 1858 and 1875. Many tissue stereocard producers are still unidentified. Many are marked only by initials such as these which are marked B.K. Photos and J.M.

National Lincoln Monument Printed on verso: This view is from a point a little east of
north from the Monument, and across a ravine running west through Oak Ridge
Cemetery. The vault at the foot of the bluff is the receiving tomb for the
Cemetery. Mr. Lincoln's remains were deposited in that vault May 4, 1865. A
flight of iron steps, commencing at the left of the vault, ascends in a curved
line to the Monument, an elevation of more than fifty feet. The door seen in
the picture of the Monument is the entrance to the Catacomb. That is where the
thieves entered on the night of Nov. 7, 1876, when they tried to steal the
remains of President Lincoln.

bronze statue in front Printed on verso: The Cavalry group, in plaster, was shipped by
Mr. Mead, the artist, with that of the Artillery, from Florence, Italy, and
arrived at Chicopee, Massachusetts, in October, 1880. The casting in bronze and
finishing was completed by the Ames Manufacturing Co., in the summer of 1882.
It was placed on the southeast pedestal of the Monument March 13, 1883. It
weighs 5,500 pounds and cost $13,700. The group represents a battle scene. The
trumpeter, mortally wounded has fallen from his horse. A comrade comes to his
assistance, and while giving his support is endeavoring with his sword hand to
ward off the approaching enemy.
