Biographical NoteReturn to Top
William Alfred Thompson (1875-1952) was born on 20 January 1875 in Port Gamble, Washington on the Kitsap Peninsula. He was one of the earliest photographers in Port Gamble. Thompson's father, James A. Thompson, came from Machias, Maine in 1859 to work in the newly established Port Gamble Mill. Thompson followed in his father's footsteps and worked as a saw filer at the mill until his retirement in 1946. He also ran the local movie theater in addition to photographing the Port Gamble community, and the Puget Mill operations at Port Gamble and Port Ludlow. Thompson and his wife died in an automobile accident in 1952.

Custodial History
It is probable that these were part of the Edwin Ames photograph colletion at one time. The Ames collection contains a number of albums. Most of these photographs, which were found in the subject files, have marks on the backs which clearly indicate that they were once part of an album. Many of them also have Edwin Ames distinctive handwriting on them.
