Philip Van Doren Stern was born in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania. Stern grew up in Brooklyn, New York and New Jersey, and graduated from Rutgers University. He was an author of over forty books, an editor known for his books on the Civil War, and a historian. He also wrote a short story titled, "The Greatest Gift," which was made into the movie "It's a Wonderful Life."

The collection contains book manuscripts, short story and other short works, printed material, correspondence, personal files.
The initial donation of 1968 contains book manuscripts, short story and other short works, printed material, correspondence, personal files, miscellaneous files.
Manuscripts (books length and short pieces) are alphabetically arranged by title and each title may include notes, drafts, research files, galley proofs, revisions, reviews, and publisher correspondence.
Periodicals and correspondence are arranged alphabetically and the personal and miscellaneous files include, book designs, fellowship papers, diaries, school and family papers, personal correspondence and photographs.
The 1973 Addenda contains outgoing professional correspondence organized by date (1937-1972), and incoming professional correspondence (1936-1972) alphabetically arranged by name of sender. The personal correspondence section includes outgoing letters (1939-1963) arranged by date, and incoming letters (1939-1965) alphabetically arranged by sender. Also included is a file of fan letters.
Manuscripts are arranged by title and each title may include notes, drafts, research files, galley proofs, revisions, reviews, and publisher correspondence. Also included are pamphlets and magazine articles by Stern arranged alphabetically, and books by Stern.
The June 1974 Addenda consists of outgoing correspondence (1935-1973) and incoming professional and personal correspondence alphabetically arranged by sender's name, and includes fan letters.
The manuscript section includes book length, article length, short stories, plays, radio scripts, and speeches and is arranged by title. Each title may include notes, drafts, research files, galley proofs, revisions, reviews, and publisher correspondence.
Also included is biographical material, drawings and scores, tearsheets of Stern's published articles, pamphlets edited by Stern, book jacket designs, books, thesis on Henry David Thoreau, and lists of books published for the Armed Forces Overseas.
